⌠Flea Waltz■ mostly consists of remakes of classics. Or psuedo-classics, which in this genre is almost the same thing, or almost the same thing. The genre itself is pretty old, and Terem Quartet contributed considerably to its development. The remaking of songs from the 19th Century using Russian folk instruments was always pretty fun, but the St. Petersburg musicians made the record somewhat anxious and extravagant. Beethoven, Schubert, Rossini and even Monti in the ⌠Flea Waltz■ turn out to be caricatures of themselves, even if friendly caricatures. Then again, the album has some of the group's ⌠own■ compositions- ⌠Barynya,■ ⌠Nikuliana■ (a potpourri on the theme of the songs of Yuri Nikulin). Everything is very clever and professional, almost calculated, but may be lacking inspiration. Then again, if you compare it to other representatives of the ⌠Russian folk genre,■ this is still pretty nice.
